Information leaflet on cannabis for therapeutic purposes

The therapeutic use of cannabis has not been legalized in Spain. Nevertheless, the Col·legi de Farmacèutics, the pharmacists association of Barcelona, is aware of the fact that a significant number of patients consume this substance for therapeutic purposes. This implies risk, since the absence of medical supervision and the variability of the active drug substances contained in the plant make it very difficult to ensure correct dosing and follow-up of consumption. In effect, since the plant is prohibited, there is a lack of control and standardization of the percentage of active ingredients in the product consumed on the market.

Therefore, and with the aim of reducing the risks associated with cannabis consumption among patients who voluntarily decide to consume the product for therapeutic reasons, we here offer information for the purpose of minimizing damage associated with the consumption of this substance.

We firmly believe that it is our duty to make  realistic and objective data on this plant and its effects available.

We do not aim to play down the risks of the plant or promote its consumption. We only wish to offer information for responsible use, without making any form of judgment - while the health authorities decide about its normalization and accept that the best way to eliminate risks and control both the quality of the product and patient behavior is to incorporate cannabis into legally established health care procedures, under due medical and pharmaceutical control.

Until this occurs, we consider it appropriate to offer patients this CANNABIS INFORMATION LEAFLET so that they may look up any aspects related to the product, its use and associated risks.
