Article:  Cannabis for therapeutic purposes

Chemical description

Dry inflorescences of the female plant of Cannabis sativa L.

Active drug substances: Cannabinoids, fundamentally delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-THC, also known as dronabinol) and, in lesser amounts, delta-9-THC acid, delta-8-THC, cannabidiol and cannabinol.

In The Netherlands two varieties are dispensed at pharmacies: Bedrocan and SIMM18. In Spain, the composition of active substances is not known, since the drug is obtained from different illegal sources with no control of the product. However, consumption of the resin (colloquially known as hashish) is absolutely not advised, since it contains a greater concentration of active substances (and thus has greater potential toxicity), as well as substances mixed with the drug that can prove extremely toxic.
